A switch-mode rectifier (SMR) can provide adjustable and well-regulated DC output voltage from the available AC source with good line drawn power quality. Depending on the input/output voltage transfer characteristics, the schematics, the operation quadrant, and control, SMRs possess many classifications and application. Typical potential application examples include grid powered motor drives, battery chargers, various power electronic facilities, micro-grids, and grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS), etc. In micro-grids, the SMR can be employed as the AC generator-followed converter to yield better generating efficiency. The SMR operation of its grid-connected inverter let the grid-to-microgrid (G2M) operation be conductable in addition to the microgrid-to-grid (M2G) operation. As for the electric vehicle (EV), the bidirectional inverter can be arranged to perform G2V/V2G operations in idle case, wherein the SMR operation is made in G2V battery charging.To promote the application potential and improve the operation performance of SMRs, this article presents the operation controls and applications of SMRs in microgrid systems incorporating BESS and EV as supplemental facilities. First, the classifications, operation principle, and some key issues of SMRs are explored.Secondly, the configuration of the studied system is introduced. Third, the controls and operations of SMRs in micro-grid, wind generators, and grid-connected interface power converters are described. Then the ones in BESS (B2G/G2B) and EV are introduced. Finally, some conclusions and suggestions are given.

This paper presents the establishment and operation control of a DC microgrid incorporating with electric vehicle (EV) as movable energy storage. The developed micro-grid consists of a wind permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) AC source and a DC source, a battery/super-capacitor/flywheel hybrid energy storage system and a grid-connected bidirectional single-phase three-wire (1P3W) load inverter. Various harvested AC and DC sources can be plugged into the microgrid via the developed interfaced power converters. In addition to good micro-grid operation performance, the microgrid-to-grid (M2G) and G2M can be successfully conducted with good power quality. As to the developed EV interior permanentmagnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive, the supercapacitor (SC) auxiliary storage is equipped to assist the main battery source in intermittent energy conversion. Satisfactory acceleration/deceleration/reversible and regenerative braking operation characteristics are obtained via the developed power stages and control schemes. Moreover, the successful microgrid-to-vehicle (M2V) and V2M interconnected operations of EV and microgrid are achieved. Besides, the vehicle-to-grid (V2G)/G2V operations can also be performed via the developed 1P3W inverter.Index Terms-Microgrid, wind generator, PMSG, PV, energy storage system, M2G, G2M, PFC, EV, IPMSM, M2V, V2M, V2G, G2V.

Summary As battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug‐in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) gain popularity among the consumers, current research initiatives are targeted at developing battery charger structures that can exploit utility power to charge vehicle batteries and thus less dependent on fuel usage. This paper reviews the state of the art and implementation of battery charger structures, charger power levels, and the evolution of publications on electric vehicles in the digital libraries and Espacenet patent base. Charger systems addressed are categorized as a structure with a non‐isolated alternating current (AC)–direct current (DC) stage, structure with an isolated AC–DC stage, and structure with two non‐isolated stages. Advantages and disadvantages of each conductive battery charging structure have been discussed due to weight, volume, cost, necessary equipment, the complexity of topologies, and other factors. In addition, both off‐board and on‐board charger systems with unidirectional or bidirectional power flow are presented. Several electronic converters for power‐level chargers are being developed to allow plug‐in vehicles to be capable of vehicle to grid (V2G), where they can function as distributed resources and power can be returned to the grid.
