On credibility of simulation studies of telecommunication networks

Abstract: In telecommunication networks, as in many other areas of science and engineering, proliferation of computers as research tools has resulted in the adoption of computer simulation as the most commonly used paradigm of scientific investigations. This, together with a plethora of existing simulation languages and packages, has created a popular opinion that simulation is mainly an exercise in computer programming. In new computing environments, programming can be minimised, or even fully replaced, by the manipula… Show more

“…OMNeT++ supports modern PRNGs such as Mersenne Twister used in our simulation study. Mersenne Twister provides a super astronomical cycle of 2 19937 −1 and good virtual randomness in up to 623 dimensions ( [26]). Further, OMNet++ supports automatic pseudo random seeding.…”

“…Statistical behaviour and analysis of the random variables is therefore very important in determining the accuracy of the simulation results [1]. In addition, the simulation model is an abstract model and the results are not as deterministic as the hardware model's results.…”

“…Researchers are now looking towards practical test-beds to better understand real-world performance and overcome some of the limitations of the analytic and simulation-based approaches [4]. Implementation of any proposed MANET protocols and algorithms on real-world test-beds is an essential part of demonstrating their worth.…”
