On Integrated Access and Backhaul Networks: Current Status and Potentials

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce and study the potentials and challenges of integrated access and backhaul (IAB) as one of the promising techniques for evolving 5G networks. We study IAB networks from different perspectives. We summarize the recent Rel-16 as well as the upcoming Rel-17 3GPP discussions on IAB, and highlight the main IAB-specific agreements on different protocol layers. Also, concentrating on millimeter wave-based communications, we evaluate the performance of IAB networks in both dense and suburban… Show more

“…For IAB networks, 3GPP has agreed on topology adaptation in order to reconfigure the backhaul to mitigate link blockage or perform load balancing [20]. A Central Unit (CU) can receive feedback on the traffic load and backhaul link quality metrics, gaining awareness of the overall IAB topology and then calculate the optimal configuration.…”

“…IAB network has gained much attraction from research and industry alike as it enables fully integrated wireless access and backhaul connectivity while availing of large swaths of mmWave spectrum. In [6], the authors summarize key aspects of Release 16 specifications and outline Release 17 IAB enhancements. Using a finite stochastic geometry model for both -IAB nodes and UEs, they provide performance analysis of IAB nodes in both dense and suburban areas.…”
