On LoRaWAN scalability: Empirical evaluation of susceptibility to inter-network interference

Abstract: Abstract-Appearing on the stage quite recently, the Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) are currently getting much of attention. In the current paper we study the susceptibility of one LPWAN technology, namely LoRaWAN, to the internetwork interferences. By means of excessive empirical measurements employing the certified commercial transceivers, we characterize the effect of modulation coding schemes (known for LoRaWAN as data rates (DRs)) of a transmitter and an interferer on probability of successful packe… Show more

“…Related work on LoRa focuses on two aspects of LoRa message collisions; the impact of collisions, and their likelihood. As the LoRaWAN protocol does not rely either on channel sensing nor on time synchronisation for collision avoidance [12], its main defence against collisions is the low data-rate of the end-devices on the network, making these collisions unlikely [13]. This assumption has In each case, if the result of the operation IS st r enдt h − DS st r enдt h is above the relevant threshold (i.e., inside the coloured areas), the desired signal will be lost.…”

“…It is shown that even high interference scenarios LoRa provides robust communication links. Mikhaylov et al [29] present a work to validate channel orthogonality within different SF values using testbed experiments. Also, LoRa GFSK mutual interference is evaluated by the study.…”

“…LoRaWAN collision model. The previous studies [35][36][37] have shown that communication in LoRaWAN networks is affected by both inter-and intra-SF interferences. To account for these effects, we employ the model based on the results, reported in Qadir et al 26 To determine whether a target packet is correctly received, we compare its signal power level at the GW with that of each other packet, transmitted during the same time in the same frequency channel.…”
