Magnetization-induced effe_ct.s in the nonlinear optical response of magnetic media, such as magnetizationinduced-second-harmonic generation (MSHG), led to very strong and novel non linear magneto-optical effects that appear to be very sensitive to magnetic interface properties. This surface-interface sensitivity ofMSHG, in combination with the very large magneto-optical effects, has led to a fast development of this technique over the past decade. On the one hand, an extreme sensitivity of MSHG to the electronic and magnetic structure of clean surfaces has been successfully demonstrated. On the other hand, the penetration depth of light allows one to use this sensitivity to study buried interfaces in multilayer systems. Further experimental developments of the MSHG technique, such as space and time t·esolution as well as magnetization-sensitive-sumfrequency generation, appear to be promising as well.

Second Harmonic Generation in the Centrosymmetric Antiferromagnet NiO

In spite of the fact that inversion is a symmetry operation of both the crystalline and the magnetic lattice of NiO, second harmonic generation (SHG) has been observed below the Néel temperature. A spectroscopic study shows that the signal is due to combined magnetic-dipole and electric-dipole transitions between the (3d)(8) levels of the Ni(2+) ion in the crystal field. The SHG is resonant in both the incoming and the outgoing light waves and thus greatly enhanced. A quadratic coupling of the nonlinear polarization to the order parameter was found. This allows the investigation of individual domains.

Symmetry analysis of second-harmonic generation at surfaces of antiferromagnets

Using group theory we classify the nonlinear magneto-optical response at low-index surfaces of fcc antiferromagnets, such as NiO. Structures consisting of one atomic layer are discussed in detail. We find that optical second harmonic generation is sensitive to surface antiferromagnetism in many cases. We discuss the influence of a second type of magnetic atoms, and also of a possible oxygen sublattice distortion on the output signal. Finally, our symmetry analysis yields the possibility of antiferromagnetic surface domain imaging even in the presence of magnetic unit-cell doubling. 78.20.Ls, 75.30.Pd, 75.50.Ee,
