On some New Mammals from the Red and Norwich Crags

Abstract: Notwithstanding the many additions which within the last few years have been made to our knowledge of the Pliocene Mammalian Fauna, by Mr. Lydekker, in the Quarterly Journal of this Society, in the ‘Geological Magazine,’ and in the British-Museum Catalogues (1885–87), several species new to the British Crags, and others altogether new to science, have come to light during a critical investigation of the Crag Yertebrata, which it has been my official duty to undertake. As it is likely to be some time … Show more

“…The relationships between the extant sea otter, Enhydra lutris, and fossil otters such as Enhydritherium terraenovae from North America and «Enhydra» reevei from England (Newton, 1890;Willemsen, 1990) ( fig. 21F) remain to be elucidated satisfactorily, even though the question has been evoked by many authors ever since Pohle (1919).…”

“…They were found on the East Anglian coast, near Felixstowe and Boyton, and described as Ailurus anglicus (Dawkins, 1888;Newton, 1890). According to Stuart (1982), this species is a component of the "Red Crag Nodule Bed Fauna."…”

“…The type specimen from Felixstowe is represented by a fragment of the lower jaw with M 2 , the record from Boyton is represented by M 1 . This material was too fragmentary for the erection of a new genus and a clear diagnosis of a species (Dawkins, 1888;Newton, 1890). This is why the genus Parailurus was described on the basis of a more complete collection (fragments of a skull and lower jaw) from the Early Pliocene Baraolt-Capeni locality in Romania (Schlosser, 1899).…”

“…The deposits exposed here are fluvial channel fills of Late Pliocene age (MN16a) and the rodent material is compared to previously published material from the contemporaneous deposits of Hambach 11. Four species are discussed: two Castoridae, Castor fiber Linnaeus, 1758 and Trogontherium minus Newton, 1890 and two Sciuridae, Blackia miocaenica Mein, 1970 and Pliopetaurista pliocaenica Depéret, 1897 . This new material is of great importance as the fossil records of T. minus and B. miocaenica are very scarce so far.…”
