On the Achievable Spectral Efficiency of Spatial Modulation Aided Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, a novel spatial modulation aided nonorthogonal multiple access (SM-NOMA) system is proposed. We use mutual information (MI) to characterize the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) of the proposed SM-NOMA system. Due to the finite-alphabet space-domain inputs employed by SM, the expression of the corresponding MI lacks a closed-form formulation. Hence, a lower bound is proposed to quantify the MI of the SM-NOMA system. Furthermore, its asymptotic property is also theoretically investigat… Show more

“…There were several prior works on SM-NOMA systems. The spectral efficiency was studied for SM-NOMA systems in the multiple-input single-output (MISO) scenario, but fixed power allocation and random user grouping were considered [6], [8]. The BER performance was investigated for SM-NOMA systems in the MIMO scenario, where the power allocation was calculated by assuming the same received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the two users after the successive interference cancellation (SIC) procedure [7].…”

“…It ensures that the users can exploit power domain resources at the same time, frequency, code domain. NOMA-based SM (SM-NOMA) systems have been well considered [6]- [8] because they have higher spectral efficiency while maintaining moderate complexity and fairness. However, the performance enhancement of the system is limited by only one chosen TA.…”

“…On the other hand, the combination of NOMA and SM has also attracted growing attention. In particular, Wang et al proposed an SM aided NOMA (SM-NOMA) system in [9], where the BS transmits the superimposed SM symbols of users. In [10], a two-user SM-NOMA scheme was introduced, where the signal of one user is conveyed in the spatial domain and the signal of the other user is conveyed in the signal domain, and thus it completely cancels the intra-cluster interference.…”

“…It has also a good backward compatability with other technologies and can be easily used in conjunction with other technologies like OFDMA, massive MIMO or spatial modulation [7]. In particular, in [8] the authors proposed a novel SM-aided NOMA system and used the mutual information metric to characterize its achievable spectral efficiency.…”
