On the Cognitive Effectiveness of Routing Symbols in Process Modeling Languages

Abstract: Abstract. Process models provide visual support for analyzing and improving complex organizational processes. In this paper, we discuss differences of process modeling languages using cognitive effectiveness considerations, to make statements about the ease of use and quality of user experience. Aspects of cognitive effectiveness are of importance for learning a modeling language, creating models, and understanding models. We identify the criteria representational clarity, perceptual discriminability, perceptu… Show more

“…These comparisons are based, for instance, on the workflow patterns [2], representational theory [58], or perceptual characteristics of the symbol set [15]. This stream of research reveals relative strengths and weaknesses of notations such as Petri nets, Event-driven Process Chains (EPCs), UML Activity Diagrams, YAWL, and Business Process modelling Notation (BPMN).…”

“…using the workflow patterns [2], representational analysis [58], or perceptual characteristics of the symbol set [15]. Here, we focus on empirical work in the context of process modelling; in the more general area of conceptual modelling empirical work is summarized in [18].…”

“…For example in [22], an evaluation of the cognitive effectiveness of BPMN using the Physics of Notations is performed. Further studies investigate certain characteristics such as routing symbols [23] or the usage of labels and icons [15]. In this paper, we use the terms symbol and icon synonymously as icons are symbols that perceptually resemble the concepts they represent [17, p.765].…”
