On the development of a semi-nonparametric generalized multinomial logit model for travel-related choices

Abstract: A semi-nonparametric generalized multinomial logit model, formulated using orthonormal Legendre polynomials to extend the standard Gumbel distribution, is presented in this paper. The resulting semi-nonparametric function can represent a probability density function for a large family of multimodal distributions. The model has a closed-form log-likelihood function that facilitates model estimation. The proposed method is applied to model commute mode choice among four alternatives (auto, transit, bicycle and w… Show more

“…In future practice with this kind of algorithms, it may be necessary to examine the quality of random draws with caution from different perspectives prior to application. Finally, it is worth mentioning that more flexible and complex error structures like semi-nonparametric specifications have been introduced into the transportation literature (40)(41)(42)(43). The developed method may also be applied to simulate more complex error structures, which could be an interesting topic for future research.…”

“…(identical and independent distribution) of standard Gumbel. The assumption is based upon two properties of the Gumbel distribution: One is its similarity to the normal distribution, while the other is the achievement of a closed-form expression for the likelihood function after being integrated with the utility maximization theory [38][39][40]. However, since error terms may have unequal variances when choice data are derived from different sources, the model cannot be developed by pooling those data directly.…”
