On the emission reduction through the application of an electrically heated catalyst to a diesel vehicle

Abstract: Exhaust emissions from diesel engine powered vehicles are considerably high during cold start and warm‐up, because of the poor catalyst performance due to the insufficient catalyst temperature. The controlled heat injection allowed by electrically heated catalysts can effectively reduce the catalyst light‐off time with relatively moderate fuel penalty. This paper compares the exhaust temperature and emissions of a case study diesel vehicle in cold and warm start conditions, and proposes two electrically heated… Show more

“…Meanwhile, hazardous emissions from vehicles are partly responsible for environmental pollution. 1,2 All kinds of measures have been taken to decrease fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, such as homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI), 3 variable valve timing, 4 thermal management, 57 high-efficiency aftertreatment, 810 alternative fuel, 11,12 model predictive control (MPC), 13 light materials 14 and low rolling resistance tyres. 15 These technologies are aimed at improving engine thermal efficiency, decreasing energy loss, dropping the formation of exhaust pollutants and enhancing catalyst efficiency, from technical points.…”

“…The impact of transportation infrastructure on urban development mainly involves its ESE impact [2]. In the aspect of economic impact, it focuses on the spatial spillover effect of urban development on economic growth and the coupling coordination between urban development and economic development [3][4][5][6]; In terms of social impact, it focuses on the analysis of regional industrial structure, urbanization level, population structure and employment [7]; In the aspect of ecological impact, scholars pay attention to the research of air pollution, noise pollution and biodiversity [8][9][10]. The sustainability of urban transportation network needs to be sustainable in many aspects such as economy, society, and ecology.…”

“…6,7 However, the EHC method and plasmacatalyzed reaction require higher electric power consumption. 3,4,8,9 In addition, TWCs require high temperatures to achieve high purification performance. 10,11 We found from an earlier study that various catalytic reactions can proceed even at low temperatures when a DC electric field is applied to a semiconductor support.…”
