IntroductionOpen-pit coal mining could disrupt the ecosystem and lead to the loss of service values for the ecosystem through direct occupation or indirect impacts on adjacent ecosystems.MethodsIn this research, we combined a new accounting system, gross ecosystem product (GEP), with spatial–temporal analyses to quantify the ecological variation and explore its driving factors in Pingshuo, a large-scale open-pit coal mining area in China. GEP is an aggregate accounting system that can summarize the value of provisioning, regulating, and cultural ecosystem services (ES) in a single monetary metric. The spatial–temporal approaches used in our study were known as exploratory spatial data analyses and interpretable models in machine learning. Both spatial and non-spatial data, including remote sensing images, meteorological data, and official statistics, were applied in the research.ResultsThe results indicated the following: (i) From 1990 to 2020, the annual average growth rates of GEP decreased from 30.78 to 9.1%. Furthermore, the classified results of GEP revealed that the regions with rich ES quality rapidly reduced from 51.90 to 32.18%. (ii) Spatial correlation of GEP was significant, and the degree of spatial clustering was relatively high in the mining areas. Moreover, the mining areas also continually presented concentrated high-density and hot spot areas of GEP changes. (iii) The spatial–temporal effects were notable in the relationship between GEP and three socioeconomic factors, i.e., the mining effects, human activity intensity, and gross domestic product (GDP). (iv) The win–win development for both the economy and ecological environment in Pingshuo could be realized by restricting the annual growth rate of mining areas to between 4.56 and 5.03%.DiscussionThe accounting results and spatial–temporal analyses of GEP will contribute to the future regional sustainable development and ecosystem management in Pingshuo.

Mine waste dump material has no economic value to the industry. Therefore, the mine waste is dumped, forming slopes. Mine waste dump slopes obtain 30% to 50% of the mining area. To reduce the land occupancy of these slopes, they are created with high altitudes. Hence, they are susceptible to failure. Slope stability analysis is a major aspect of geotechnical engineering. Slope stability analyses are mostly done with assumptions on the geometry. This is avoided in this paper with the usage of UAVs. The 3D model is created from UAV imagery of a coal mine in Raniganj coalfield, India. The model is fine-tuned with the DGPS survey. Geotechnical data were collected and tested in the laboratory for various numerical analyses. An active mine waste dump slope is analyzed for slope failure. Earthquakes and rainfall cannot be controlled, and their effects on the stability of the mine waste dump slope were examined. The study extracted various factor of safety (FOS) analyses on static, seismic, and rainfall conditions. The seismic condition simulates a condition of the slope to be failed with low (0.948) FOS. However, rainfall condition predicts the slope to be more stable. The deformation pattern and magnitude of the slope failure are also discussed.

Coal mining areas such as Kuzbass create a land resources heavy anthropogenic loading. In the region many territory occupied with mining and mine waste, resulting in the land degradation and disturbed land are. Dusting and Assuring lead to land cover degradation in the surrounding areas to mining. As a result, the socio-economic value of these territories is reduced in terms of cadastral value of land, recreational and agricultural using. In modern land management practices, this factor has not yet been underrecognized, and the regional economics has loss of profit. There is no methodological tool to identify such negative impact on the environment, special studies are presented by a few works of soil investigators and biologists. The authors of the article propose to use insights and interpretation of multispectural space surveys of disturbed territories as tools for monitoring and assessing the negative impact of the territories disturbed with mining to the surrounding areas. In the article the ecological-economic results of the space images processing and the extent of the negative impact on vegetation and soil of spaces around disturbed areas not formally classified as disturbed, are presented. The work is performed a case study of Kuzbass.
