Tremendous progress in reducing turbo code computational complexity, memory requirements and performance limitations is leading to their wide use in commercial communications systems.ABSTRACT | For decades, the de facto standard for forward error correction was a convolutional code decoded with the Viterbi algorithm, often concatenated with another code (e.g., aReed-Solomon code). But since the introduction of turbo codes in 1993, much more powerful codes referred to collectively as turbo and turbo-like codes have eclipsed classical methods.These powerful error-correcting techniques achieve excellent error-rate performance that can closely approach Shannon's channel capacity limit. The lure of these large coding gains has resulted in their incorporation into a widening array of telecommunications standards and systems. This paper will briefly characterize turbo and turbo-like codes, examine their implications for physical layer system design, and discuss standards and systems where they are being used. The emphasis will be on telecommunications applications, particularly wireless, though others are mentioned. Some thoughts on the use of turbo and turbo-like codes in the future will also be given.

Aim of the paper is to present a novel digital platform for the transmitting side (NDP-Tx) of a deep space transponder which has been developed by Alenia Spazio in the frame of the ESA study on "Digital Techniques for TT&C Transponder" [I]. The proposed design has unique features in terms of flexibility and interfacing with the spacecraft Command Data Sub-System (CDS). The NDP-Tx supports standard telemetry modulation formats based on residual carrier and more advanced schemes aiming to improve the space-to-earth link performance. In fact, in case of limited available power, as for satellite transmitters, the power efficiency is maximised driving the power amplifier in saturation, i.e. in the non-linear region of its transfer characteristic. Using constant (i.e. GMSK) or quasi-constant (i.e. Square-Root Raised Cosine SRRC-Filtered OQPSK) envelope modulation allows the transmitter stage to operate in saturation without the drawback of the non-linear distortion (i.e. adjacent channel interference due to sidelobes spreading and regeneration).

SUMMARYThe Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) standards establish a common framework for space telemetry, command and tracking, and covers many applications like deep space and near-Earth missions, Earth exploration, tracking and data relay satellites. In this paper, we present a study on the symbol synchronization properties of the turbo code scheme recently adopted as one of the channel coding options for CCSDS telemetry recommendations. An extensive analysis is presented for transition/symbol probability, run-length distribution and other parameters of key importance for synchronization recovery. All the code rates achievable by the examined turbo code are considered and analysed. We demonstrate that the behaviour of the CCSDS turbo code is generally good, satisfactorily matched with practical requirements, and better than more conventional solutions included in the previous standards. Some critical conditions are also discussed, their meaning interpreted and suitable countermeasures proposed.
