On the search for environmental sustainability in Africa: the role of governance

Abstract: Africa remains the most affected by environmental degradation, thereby exacerbating the negative effect of climate change in the region. Little empirical credence has been leaned to the institution-environmental sustainability relationship in Africa. This omission in the literature of environmental sustainability is abysmal, considering the role of institutions and government in ecological preservation. To inform policy and research on the subject matter, we estimated a unbalanced panel data of the indices of … Show more

“…This implies that a percentage increase in energy used per capita will induce a 0.137 per cent increase in Nigeria's carbon dioxide emission. This results reaffirm greater energy consumption and increase carbon emission relations as observed in the work of Cheng and Yao (2021); Adekunle (2020). Also, GDP per capita is positive and statistically significant at 1%.…”

“…Population growth is exerting significant pressure on the earth's finite environmental resources, forcing governments to search for approaches that guarantee sustainable resource use (Adekunle 2020). Growing unsustainable resource use and declining environmental quality remains a preoccupying global issue with several attendant effects, including food insecurity (IPCC 2014).…”

“…Furthermore, SSA's economy contracted by 3% in 2020-indicating an over 5% drop in real per capita income, compared to 2013 levels (IMF 2020). This paradox is, at least, partially rooted in poor resource governance regimes that failed to address issues of accountability, transparency, participation and conflict management-thereby compromising sustainable resource management (Ayee 2014;Arthur 2014;Adekunle 2020). The paradox has seemingly assumed a perennial attribute, as resource conflicts, rather than resource transformation cases are on the rise.…”

“…The United Nations has placed a sharper focus on environmental conservation and has urged the entire globe to be united in keeping the environment healthy. Therefore, it is recommended that governments and institutions offer the primary step for the transition to the pursuit of environmental protection (Adekunle, 2021). Moreover, the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development calls for a need to create global awareness of sustainable development and to encourage healthy living.…”
