Detailed optical absorption curves of gamma-irradiated LiF:Mg, Ti are presented. Computerised curve-fitting of the spectra allow for the behaviour of the individual peaks to be followed as a function of irradiation dose, optical bleaching and post-irradiation annealing. The absorption spectra, taken at -196 degrees C, consists of at least six major peaks. The authors find no compelling evidence to relate either the 4.4 eV or the 5.3 eV bands to Z-type centres. The 5.7 eV may be a Z-type defect but of unknown structure. The results do not support the recently presented 'modified Z-centre model' for thermoluminescence production in this material.
