Phenolic resin (PR)‐based composites are the main materials used in thermal protection system (TPS) at present. However, the low graphitization degree of the char layer formed by PR easily leads to cracks and other defects. In this study, carbon/phenolic composites were modified by mesophase pitch (MP) to improve the structural strength, fracture toughness and crack propagation resistance. The ablation rate was significantly decreased after MP modification compared with the blank sample. With the increase of MP, the size of cracks and char blocks on the ablation center of the composites were reduced, and the surface was flat and dense. The Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbonized composites (5 wt% MP) were 9.79 MPa, and the flexural strength was 121.5 MPa, which improved 62.9% and 40.8% relative to the pure sample. The flexural strength of 5 wt% MP‐reinforced carbon/phenolic composites reached 525.6 MPa, which was 26.9% higher than that of pure carbon/phenolic composites, mainly due to the particle reinforcement effect of MP distributed between carbon fibers. The above results show that the carbon/phenolic composites modified by MP has great application prospects in the field of aircraft thermal protection.

The structural integrity of sapphire optical windows was numerically and experimentally evaluated under the wall heat flux of the scramjet intake. The considered heating profile was [Formula: see text] during 60 s, and the heating profile for the numerical and experimental approaches was the same. A numerical study was performed using the finite element method; the numerical results predicted that the maximum temperature of the optical window under the heating condition was about 600 K, the maximum principal stress was less than the strength of the sapphire, and the failure of the optical window would not occur based on the brittle Coulomb–Mohr material failure theory. The heating test was performed using an electrical heater under the heating condition, and the morphology was investigated using scanning electron and atomic force microscopies. The experimental results indicated that no cracks or fractures occurred on the surface of the optical window after the heating test, except for a slight change in the shape and roughness of the microstructure.

In this article, a model-free control (MFC) using super twisting nonlinear fractional order sliding mode for aerodynamic heating ground simulation of hypersonic vehicles (AHGSHV) is proposed. Firstly, the mathematical model of AHGSHV is built up. To reduce order and simplify the dynamic model of AHGSHV, an ultra-local model of MFC is taken into consideration. Then, time delay estimation can be used to estimate systematic uncertainties and external unknown disturbances. On the basis of the original fractional order sliding mode surface, the nonlinear function fal is introduced to design the nonlinear fractional order sliding mode surface, which can guarantee stability, increase convergence rate, and reduce static error and saturation error. In addition, the super twisting reaching law is used to improve the control performance of the reaching phase, resulting from the existence of sign function in the integral term, and it can effectively reduce the high-frequency chattering. Moreover, the Lyapunov function is used to prove the stability of the whole system. Finally, several numerical simulations show that the designed controller has more advantages than others.
