One-dimensional photonic crystal-based biosensor for the detection of glucose concentration in human urine

Abstract: A biosensor structure based on a ternary photonic crystal (TPC) containing a defect is designed and simulated. This proposed biosensor detects the concentration of glucose in human urine. Based on the transfer matrix method, we theoretically studied the transmission spectra through the TPC presuming blood samples with different refractive indices (RIs) infiltrated into the defect layer of the proposed structures. By varying the concentration of glucose in the urine, the RI of the urine is changed, which in tur… Show more

“…The selected wavelength range is suitable for medical applications, such as viral detection, which is one of the intended applications of the biosensor. 18,21 Using the wellknown TMM to calculate the transmittance spectrum curves of the TPC without any defect at initial conditions of normal angle of incidence and periodic number in both sides equal N ¼ 3, the key finding in the first suggested structure without a defect layer illustrated in Fig. 1 denotes the presence of a photonic band gap, as shown in Fig.…”

“…17 Recently, 1D-PC-based biosensors received considerable attention in the detection of different diseases such as cancer cells, 18 malaria infection, 19 and diabetes. 20,21 Chikungunya disease has also been the interest of PCs by Sharma et al, 8 who designed a 2D-PC double ring resonator-based biosensor. It also has an excellent S of 3430 nm∕RIU and a low-quality factor (Q) of 60.21.…”

“…Several biosensing applications have been reported using 1D PCs, such as the detection of extracellular vesicles [ 15 ], viruses [ 16 ], bacteria [ 17 ], proteins, DNA, and RNA [ 10 ]. One-dimensional photonic crystal-based biosensors for glucose monitoring have shown promising results in terms of sensitivity and Q-factor [ 18 ].…”
