One week triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori: a multicentre comparative study

Abstract: Background-Eradication ofThere was a significant diVerence (p < 0.001) in the proportion of patients in whom eradication was successful between LAC and LCM when compared with LAM, but no significant diVerence (p = 0.15) between LAM and OAM. Metronidazole resistance before treatment was identified as a significant prognostic factor with regard to eradication of H pylori. The regimens which contained metronidazole were significantly less eVective than those without metronidazole in the presence of pretreatment r… Show more

“…In our study, the eradication rate (87.5%), was similar to the ones reported by other authors (1,2,4,13,15,16,22) and the metronidazole resistance influenced the therapy outcome in 14.3% of the patients. The higher rates of metronidazole resistance in Brazil can be due its widespread use in gynecological infections and parasitic diseases like giardiasis and amebiasis (27) .…”

“…Our eradication rate of about 86% with 1-week treatment using a combination of two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor compares favourably with results from other studies which used similar 1-week regimens from Europe [12,13], China [14], Turkey [15] and USA [16]. In these studies too, the rates of H. pylori eradication were not significantly higher with prolonged treatment compared to treatment for 1 week.…”

“…Studies by Lind and colleagues, published in 1996, 57 and Misiewicz and colleagues, published in 1997, 66 provided the best evidence for parameter estimates on efficacy as they were recent RCTs including UK centres and patients.…”
