Drug discovery teams continuously have to decide which compounds to progress and which experiments to perform next, but the data required to make informed decisions is often scattered, inaccessible, or inconsistent. In particular, data tend to be stored and represented in a compound-centric or assay-centric manner rather than project-centric as often needed for effective use in drug discovery teams. The Integrated Project Views (IPV) system has been created to fill this gap; it integrates and consolidates data from various sources in a project-oriented manner. Its automatic gathering and updating of project data not only ensures that the information is comprehensive and available on a timely basis, but also improves the data consistency. Due to the lack of suitable off-the-shelf solutions, we were prompted to develop custom functionality and algorithms geared specifically to our drug discovery decision making process. In 10 years of usage, the resulting IPV application has become very well-accepted and appreciated, which is perhaps best evidenced by the observation that standalone Excel spreadsheets are largely eliminated from project team meetings.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the capabilities of Enterprise 2.0 tools align to the tasks knowledge workers perform. The objective is to provide knowledge workers and information architects with a framework that enables the development of a suite of Enterprise 2.0 tools in support of knowledge management across the full knowledge lifecycle. Design/methodology/approach -The capabilities of Enterprise 2.0 tools were mapped against the requirements associated with each of the four main domains (chaotic, complex, knowable and known) of the Cynefin framework. Findings -The Cynefin model provides a useful framework for illustrating how the various tools within an Enterprise 2.0 suite support the different activities/tasks knowledge workers perform. Aligning Enterprise 2.0 tools based on the domain requirements of the Cynefin model allows the classification of these capabilities based on a task-based framework rather than the traditional feature/function-based ones. Practical implications -Application of this framework will help knowledge workers and information architects understand the relationship between technical capabilities and business tasks. This understanding will help both in tool selection with respect to business problem (architects) and also provide clarity of purpose in support of change management/adoption (knowledge workers). Originality/value -Much of the literature around understanding Enterprise 2.0 tools has focused on a classical feature/function classification. The analysis presented here provides a classification based on the Cynefin model of knowledge creation. This classification model provides a valuable tool to those interested in developing environments that enable collaboration and knowledge generation/capture using these capabilities.

Electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) will probably replace paper laboratory notebooks (PLNs) in academic research due to their advantages in data recording, sharing and security. Despite several reports describing technical characteristics of ELNs and their advantages over PLNs, no study has directly tested ELN performance among researchers. In addition, the usage of tablet-based devices or wearable technology as ELN complements has never been explored in the field. To implement an ELN in our biomedical research institute, here we first present a technical comparison of six ELNs using 42 parameters. Based on this, we chose two ELNs, which were tested by 28 scientists for a 3-month period and by 80 students via hands-on practical exercises. Second, we provide two survey-based studies aimed to compare these two ELNs (PerkinElmer Elements and Microsoft OneNote) and to analyze the use of tablet-based devices. We finally explore the advantages of using wearable technology as ELNs tools. Among the ELNs tested, we found that OneNote presents almost all parameters evaluated (39/42) and both surveyed groups preferred OneNote as an ELN solution. In addition, 80% of the surveyed scientists reported that tablet-based devices improved the use of ELNs in different respects. We also describe the advantages of using OneNote application for Apple Watch as an ELN wearable complement. This work defines essential features of ELNs that could be used to improve ELN implementation and software development.
