The use of habitat by fish is closely related to efforts to find the best conditions for the survival of these fish. This study aims to analyze the habitat preferences of Striped snakehead in Rawa Aopa waters, Southeast Sulawesi. This research was conducted from November 2018 to February 2019 in the waters of Swamp Aopa Southeast Sulawesi. Fish collection using traps. The constancy and fidelity index determined the preference of striped snakehead for habitat type. A total of 1024 striped snakehead fish were caught during the study with a length range of 200,0-420,0 mm and 69,0-596,0 g weight. Striped snakehead measuring 200-367 mm were consistent in occupying habitats with a slightly dense to dense water plant density, while sizes 368-388 and 389-430 mm were consistent in habitats with sparse water plant density. The preference level of striped snakehead fish size 389-430 mm to habitats with rare aquatic plants is very high (Fij = 6). Therefore, the size can be used as an indicator of habitats with the rare aquatic plant category. The preference for 200-367 mm striped snakehead fish in dense aquatic plant habitats indicates that these habitats are foraging, growing, and protective zones. Chitala (350-790 mm) from Batanghari River, Jambi Province [21], but it was larger than the sizes of N. notopterus (137-354) mm from freshwater research center, India [22] or N. Notopterus (120-249 mm) mm from Simpur Reservoir, Bangka District [13]. According to Adjie et al [21], the featherback had a low fecundity as compared to other fish species, such as snakehead Channa striat a [23], climbing perch Anabas test udineus [24], patin Pangasius hypophthalmus [25], lais Ompok hypophthalmus [26] or Thai catfish Clarias batrachus [27]. Featherback Fishery in Barito Kuala District, Indonesia: Potency, Business Opportunity and Challenge

Barito Kuala District is the largest producer of the featherback (Notopterus chitala) in South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. It contributes about 42.29% of total regional fisheries production. Recently, supply and demand of raw material for fish chips processing business is completely dependent on the catch from the rivers. Ironically the capture fishery production for featherback tends to decline, which absolutely affecting on production volume and selling expense of the fish products. No commercial aquaculture supports this business, so far. Data on capture fishery, fish processing business and fish farming were tabulated and analyzed using descriptive method. There was a great market opportunity for featherback chips in this area of study, where the demand of fish chips (36 tons/year) was six times higher than the supply to the market (6 tons/year). The average annual profit received by the producer was USD 897. The Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Net Benefit Cost Ratio (Net B/C) were USD 2,796, 137%, and 4.59 with the Payback Period (PP) value was 8 months 15 days, indicating business was considered feasible and profitable, as well as has the favorable prospect. To increase the values, the culture business should be promoted. An attempt was made by Freshwater Fish Culture Center Mandiangin to culture them; however, the result are still being challenged to overcome this problem. The ideal interconnection of the three key issues was further discussed.

Barred loach Nemacheilus fasciatus are unable to reproduce naturally in captivity due to the lack of environmental cues and gonadal maturation occurs slower than in the wild. To optimize breeding procedures for this fish species, we determined whether hormone application via the gills was an effective process and assessed hormone dosage treatments. Oodev™ was used to induce gonadal maturation and Ovaprim™ was used to induce spawning via a topical gill approach. Multiple maturation parameters such as gonadal-somatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI), fecundity, and egg diameter; and spawning parameters such as latency period, egg produce, fertilization rate (FR), hatching rate (HR), survival rate (SR) were recorded and compared between the hormone dosage treatments and control treatment. Both the Oodev™ gonadal maturation induction and Ovaprim™ spawning induction were effectively applied to barred loach via topical gill application. Gonadal maturation parameters were positively correlated with dosage and all were significantly different. Fry survival rate was not different between doses. The optimal dose of Oodev™ (0.75 µL/g fish) resulted in male GSI of 5.334 ± 0.320%, female GSI of 15.501 ± 0.675%, male HSI of 0.416 ± 0.023%, female HSI of 1.670 ± 0.104%, egg fecundity 4584.20 ± 493.216 eggs, egg diameter 0.964 ± 0.0151 mm. Ovaprim™ optimal dosage (3.00 µL/g female and 1.50 µL/g male) was resulted latency period 11.05 ± 0.52 hours, egg produced 3504.83 ± 358.57, FR 96.77 ± 0.88%, HR 83.62 ± 3.78%, and SR 91.44 ± 2.53%.
