Oosorption in the stink bug Plautia stali: role of Juvenile hormone in the induction of oosorption

Abstract: To clarify the role of Juvenile hormone (JH) in the induction of oosorption in females of the stink bug Plautia stali Scott (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), the effects of extirpation and implantation of the corpus cardiac‐corpus allatum complex (CC‐CA) are examined in fed and starved adults, respectively. Removal of CC‐CA induces oosorption in fed females, whereas CC‐CA implantation stimulates ovary development in starved females. Transection of the nervous connections between the brain and CC‐CA also exerts a s… Show more

Although oosorption has been demonstrated by young Plautia stali in the laboratory (Kotaki, Kaihara, Ando, Misaki, & Shinada, 2016), there is no evidence for oosorption in older females entering diapause.…”

“…Starvation is a common challenge and is an important factor in inducing oosorption 1,24 . Many insect species have been reported to resorb large or specific stages of oocytes in their ovarioles during vitellogenesis under conditions of starvation stress; this leads to a reduction in the number of oocytes and egg load in the ovaries 3,4,68,12,13,25–30 . In the present study, the number of mature embryos and the average volume of the largest embryo within each ovariole increased significantly with increasing starvation time (Figs 1 and 2).…”

“…In Pentatomidae, females can lay eggs even without copulation (Cingolani et al, 2020), a process that requires a large amount of energy. The lack of food, however, can lead to the process of reabsorption of developing oocytes (Kotaki et al, 2016). The ideal rearing conditions and ad lib food may have contributed to the oviposition of virgin females of E. heros.…”
