“…Direct effects on plant health of climate warming, increased pollutants and CO 2 concentrations (Kliejunas et al 2008;McElrone et al 2010;Davies et al 2011;Eastburn et al 2011) will be accompanied by the easier introduction of exotic invasive species (Chakraborty et al 2000;Lonsdale and Gibbs 2002;Ganley et al 2011;Chytrý et al 2012). Introductions of novel plant pathogens have already occurred in many regions (Brown and Hovmøller 2002;Dehnen-Schmutz et al 2010;Stenlid et al 2011; Fig.…”

“…The stations represent a variety of site types, including suburban, urban background, industrial, roadside and kerbside locations. Second, we analysed data from a new network of weather stations which was set up as part of the OPen Air Laboratories (OPAL) project (Davies et al, 2011). The weather stations are Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus automatic weather stations measuring standard meteorological variables, although during EM25 measurements of solar irradiance were used to infer column aerosol loadings on clear days .…”

“…41 In a social science literature that has so far concentrated on assessing the learning and science policy outcomes of CS, the voices of scientists and science communicators themselves have been little heard(see also Bonney et al's call for more research in this area 42 ). Focusing on the UK's Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) 43 Programme, a particularly innovative and encompassing programme with a combined outdoor learning and CS component, we draw on a series of interviews with the scientists and communicators involved to offer an empirical analysis of the challenges they faced, and thus aim to open up some of the potential conflicts anticipated in this section to further research. The paper compares their experiences in order to identify three potential flashpoints that we argue will need to be taken account of in the design of future CS projects if they are indeed to be win-win scenarios for both scientists and the participants.…”
