Open versus robotic-assisted transabdominal preperitoneal (R-TAPP) inguinal hernia repair: a multicenter matched analysis of clinical outcomes

Abstract: In this matched analysis, R-TAPP provides similar postoperative complications prior to discharge and a lower rate of postoperative complications through 30 days compared to open repair. R-TAPP is a promising and reproducible approach, and may facilitate adoption of minimally invasive repairs of inguinal hernias.

“…17 Of the remaining 22 observational studies, 6 were conference abstracts. 23,26,28,32,33,37 The robotic approach was compared with the open approach in 14 studies (Table 2), [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][28][29][30]32,35,36 while the robotic approach was compared with the laparoscopic approach in 18 studies (Table 1). [18][19][20][21][24][25][26][27][28][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39] The majority of the studies were performed within the US, with 2 performed at non-US institutions.…”

“…The enhanced visualization, dexterity, precision, and ergonomics offered by the system have led to the expansion of minimally invasive surgery available to patients while improving postoperative outcomes. 6 9 Toesca and Sarfati have used a robotically assisted surgical system (da Vinci Xi, Intuitive) to perform robotically assisted NSM (RNSM) and immediate breast reconstruction with implant. 10 18 We should note that at this present time, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not cleared this procedure for use with the da Vinci Surgical System.…”
