Opening a turtle graveyard: Size distribution of dead individuals of Phrynops geoffroanus (Pleurodira, Chelidae)

Abstract: Aquatic animals, such as freshwater turtles, are much dependent on the water bodies where they live. Here we describe the size distribution of a population of Phrynopsgeoffroanus complex that died after the total drought of the artificial water reservoir where it lived in Caatinga. Amongst the 438 animals we found dead in the Cedro water reservoir, we measured the maximum carapace length of 72 individuals. The population was mainly composed of adult individuals and dead turtles measured in areas that kept wate… Show more

“…According to the authors, these species/ lineages are restricted to specific river basins and biomes but are morphologically cryptic, and specimens from the Northeast Brazil correspond to P. geoffroanus lineage 3. Phrynops geoffroanus is considered a medium-sized species (Rueda-Almonacid et al 2007;Rodrigues et al 2019), which nests in sandy or clay soil, usually covered by shrub vegetation, and preferably in places with good exposure to the sun (Medem 1960). In natural conditions (Souza and Abe 2001), clutches are laid in the driest period of the year while hatching occurs during the rainy season.…”

“…Habita tanto cuerpos de agua lóticos como lénticos y suelen asolearse sobre rocas y troncos. Es una especie principalmente carnívora, aunque puede consumir ocasionalmente plantas (Souza & Abe 2000;Martins et al 2010;Rodriguez et al 2019). La especie está categorizada como "Insuficientemente Conocida" para Argentina y a nivel internacional no está categorizada (Prado et al 2012).…”
