“…The β-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin polymer (β-EPI) was synthesized by following the procedure reported by Pellicer et al (2019) and modified by Romita et al (2019). To obtain a final product with 1:25 CD:EPI molar ratio, 24 g of β-cyclodextrin and 60 mg of sodium borohydride were dispersed in 24 mL of deionized water, and the system was left under stirring at 50 °C for 10 min, then 26 mL of 40% (w/v) NaOH were added, and subsequently, 41.25 mL of epichlorohydrin (EPI) were introduced dropwise, keeping the system under agitation at 50 °C for 5 h. The so formed gel was washed four times according to the following order: first with 100 mL of acetone, then twice with 100 mL of water, and finally with 100 mL of acetone.…”

“…Depending on the material used, adsorption can be very advantageous in terms of biocompatibility and environmental sustainability: several "bio-based" adsorbents, such as chitosan and cyclodextrin polymers, and industrial wastes, such as olive pomace, are very "green", cheap, harmless, and allow effective removal of several categories of EPs. Above all, they can be regenerated and reused multiple times, thus also promoting a circular economy (Rizzi et al 2017(Rizzi et al , 2018(Rizzi et al , 2019(Rizzi et al , 2020Romita et al 2019).…”

“…An organic solvent such as acetonitrile increases atrazine solubility in water, justifying its selection for this desorption study. The use of methanol as the most adequate extraction solvent for atrazine desorption from synthetic polymers was demonstrated in a recent study, achieving 73.5% as maximum atrazine desorption percentage [67]. In the same study, it was concluded that higher efficiency values are reached for all materials when using a lower content of organic solvent, which minimizes the environmental impact of this process.…”

“…In contrast, the adsorption rate of DS on unmodified zeolite was 52%. Romita et al (2019) studied the adsorption and removal of atrazine in water by α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrin-epichlorohydrin water-insoluble copolymers (CEWICs). The order of adsorption capacity was found to be α-CEWICs > β-CEWICs > γ-CE-WICs, and the best contact time of adsorbent solution was 1 hr.…”
