Operations in Space: Exploring a New Industry

Abstract: This article sets the stage for examining operations management research opportunities in the emerging industry that involves operations in outer space. Currently, space exploration is moving in new and exciting directions, thanks to private investment and a more collaborative, commercial industry structure. While we do not yet know if space will be the next big industry, we make the case that the potential is certainly there. In this article, we outline the challenges presented within the “space industry” and… Show more

“…As a result of the increasing demand for communication satellites to meet the needs of television providers, telephone services and global positioning data applications, a small number of commercial applications emerged. The increasing demand for space activities combined with more cost-conscience government space agencies led to more cooperation between governmental space agencies and private entities (Wooten and Tang, 2018).…”

“…, 2008; Blount and Robison, 2016). Thanks to the rapidly declining costs of relevant technologies, there exists a booming space industry that produces things going into outer space, such as satellites and rockets (Wooten and Tang, 2018). As the various types of space activities have increased, a broader concept of space economy has emerged that encompasses all products and services involved in exploring and utilizing outer space.…”

“…His paper focusses on the latter challenges. Wooten and Tang (2018) suggest four unique grand challenges for a prosperous space economy to overcomeextreme distances, gravity, inhospitable environments and information availability. Each unique factor is present in varying amounts depending on the accounting issue to address (Alewine, 2020).…”

“…Designing space services is complex and technology-driven, and the cost of lead items and resupply pose a challenge. However, the industry is fueled by the public demand and the intervention of private sector in manufacturing the space equipment, coordinating the growing number of entities, and applying a new collaborative method (Wooten & Tang, 2018). The demand for orbital and suborbital space travel is forecasted to increase up to USD 214,94 billion by 2030 (Hurley, 2022); greater the demand, greater the preservation potential of that innovation (Danov, 2020).…”
