Opioids and Down’s syndrome

Abstract: Opioids are used in clinical practice for sedation, anesthesia, and analgesia. Their effects depend on their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics. The liver is the major site for the biotransformation of most opioids. The major metabolic pathway is oxidation. Metabolism influences distribution, clearance, onset, and offset of opioid drugs. Action also depends on the coupling of opioids with the class of receptors involved and on localization of specific receptors. Three major types of opioid rec… Show more

“…More research is already shedding light on the mechanisms of glioma cell migration and invasion. Intersectin1 (ITNS1; also called EHSH1, Dap160, or ESE‐1) is a highly conserved protein during evolution and possesses multiple domains (Mafrica and Fodale,2006). It has two isoforms: the long isoform (ITSN1‐l) and the short isoform (ITSN1‐s).…”

“…Of the 16 articles included, five did not match our preset outcomes, although having been selected according to keywords and inclusion criteria. Four were narrative reviews (Mafrica & Fodale, 2006; Mafrica et al, 2006; McGuire & Kennedy, 2013; Symons et al, 2008) and one was a brief report (Doody & Bailey, 2019). They are nevertheless briefly summarized below.…”

“…Mafrica and Fodale (2006) published a topical review on opioids and Down syndrome, discussing in depth opioid pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics within the perspective of potential alteration in opioid pathways in the target population. Clues on perioperative opioid dosing and adverse effects are given on the basis of case reports (Mafrica & Fodale, 2006).…”
