Opportunities and Barriers for Valorizing Waste Incineration Bottom Ash: Iberian Countries as a Case Study

Abstract: Incineration bottom ashes (IBA) are the main waste from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration. In the Iberian countries (Portugal and Spain), MSW incineration with energy recovery (WtE) plays an important role in MSW management. IBA is highly produced and managed differently both between and within countries. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the management model of IBA using the Iberian Peninsula as a case study, addressing its properties, current management, incentives and difficultie… Show more

“…In that case, the ability of the roots to absorb nutrients is also higher, and the photosynthesis process goes well so that the photosynthetic allocated to all parts of the plant is included for root growth, increasing root growth and root volume. Different IBA applications are likely to continue to be developed in the future with a concern for environmental protection and the sustainability of human life (Bandarra et al 2021).…”

“…This MSW is mainly comprised of household rubbish, with a small input from commercial vendors. The facility produces about 32 kt of fresh IBA each year [44]. IBA produced in the SIRUSA facility is treated in a conditioning plant (VECSA), where valuable metals are recovered, lightweight unburned materials are removed, and the mineral fraction is sieved to obtain a grading envelope (0-30 mm).…”

“…Municipal solid waste incineration power generation can make full use of the calorific value of waste and eliminate a large number of harmful bacteria and toxic substances it contains [ 1 ]. After incineration, waste can be reduced in weight and volume by 70% and 90%, respectively [ 2 ]. Therefore, incineration is an ideal waste treatment method.…”
