Opportunities and challenges of blockchain in the fishing companies supply chain: A review of the literature between 2018 and 2022

Abstract

The research aims to describe the relationship between blockchain and the fishing companies' value chain for the period 2018-2022, as well as describe the benefits and challenges of said technology. This systematic review of the scientific literature analyzed 23 articles using the PRISMA methodology. The findings of this research reveal that the main benefits of blockchain are related to process optimization, costs reduction, and improved tracking capabilities. However, implementing this system can be expensive, which may exclude small companies that are an important link of this chain. Moreover, more research is needed regarding the actual application of the technology in this sector, to address some potential pitfalls or aspects that the current technology might not be able to track.
