Opportunities for Improving the Environmental Profile of Silk Cocoon Production under Brazilian Conditions

Abstract: Brazilian silk production is amongst the five largest in the world. Nonetheless, there is no life cycle assessment study on silk cocoon production and its upstream processes, pertaining to the mulberry production (fundamental upstream process for silk production), in the existing literature. The objective of this study was to identify opportunities to improve the environmental profile of mulberry and silk cocoon production under Brazilian conditions. To that end, a life cycle assessment was conducted for the c… Show more

“…In this sense, this study continues the initiative for conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the silk yarn production system in Brazil, as the first steps reported in [5,6]. As a result, this paper accomplishes a qualitative inventory of the silk yarn manufacturing phase.…”

“…Previous works have assessed impacts and identified opportunities for improving the environmental profile of raw silk cocoon production [5,6]. However, it is important to consider not only the possible impacts of silk farm systems, but also, impacts in other stages of the silk supply chain.…”

“…For example, in the case of Bombyx mori silk, a life cycle assessment that analyzes the direct and indirect environmental impacts of silk production from mulberry planting and silkworms rearing to cocoons degumming and allocation of co-products are essential to justify large-scale utilization of silk in the AgroFood system, to address any sustainability concerns and to provide guidance for improvements in each silk production step. [418,419] Finally, engineering biomaterials into fibers and particles of nanoscale dimensions tend to raise ecotoxicity concerns. More research on nanomaterials-plant interactions and mechanisms of action, as well as on environmental and human health risks from engineered nanomaterials, are needed to support the responsible development of novel technologies and their introduction to the market.…”

“…One of the non-timber forest products with the potential to resolve economic challenges during and after a crisis is the natural silk produced by sericulture agribusiness. Sericulture is a prospective and potential activity that can regularly generate higher income [ 15 , 16 ]. Apart from its ability to provide gainful employment and economic improvement for people in rural areas due to the high selling price of its products [ 15 , 16 ], sericulture also plays an important role in preventing the migration of rural people to urban areas in search of employment [ 17 , 18 ].…”
