Optic Nerve Assessment Using 7-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to correlate high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histologic findings in a case of juxtapapillary choroidal melanoma with clinical evidence of optic nerve invasion. Methods: With institutional review board approval, an enucleated globe with choroidal melanoma and optic nerve invasion was imaged using a 7-tesla MRI followed by histopathologic evaluation. Results: Optical coherence tomography, B-scan ultrasonography, and 1.5-tesla MRI of the orbit (1-mm sect… Show more

“…24,25,46 The use of ultra-high-field MRI allows even higher spatial resolutions, such as 0.25 mm and 0.70 mm at 7 Tesla, but is mostly used for research purposes only. 7,47 Owing to the lower spatial resolution in our study, we cannot rule out that partial volume effects may have a greater effect on the accuracy of the measurements compared with studies with higher spatial resolution. It also cannot be ruled out that patient suffered from undocumented eye disease and were incorrectly included in the study cohort.…”

“…According to published guidelines for evaluation of retinoblastoma, the field strength of the MR system should be at least 1.5 T [2]. There are few reports on the use of ultrahigh-field 7T MRI, reporting superior submillimeter resolution for ocular structures and intraocular tumors, but these are mostly experimental [10].…”

“…One possible indication for 7.0T imaging is the question of whether the tumor has already infiltrated the optic nerve . Despite the slightly bigger artifacts of the OTM (5.3 mm for 7.0T MRI vs 4.7 mm for 3.0T MRI), 7.0T MRI will be of benefit for treatment planning of ophthalmologic proton therapy: The contours of big tumors should be more realistic.…”
