“…2 O 12 , which has 160 atoms in the unit cell [15]. Another plausible reason is the significant disorder in the lattice of C12A7 causing inhomogeneous broadening effects in the spectra.…”

“…Since Gd is commercially much cheaper than Lu, the (Gd 1− x Lu x )AG solid solutions may replace LuAG to be used as cost effective and high density scintillation materials. Assayed from UV/vis absorption, the (Gd 1− x Lu x )AG solid solutions were found to have increasing optical bandgaps of ∼5.87, 5.97, 6.07, 6.17, 6.27, and 6.37 eV with increasing x from 0 to 0.5 (0.1 interval, figure 4(b)) [17], and the bandgap of (Gd 0.5 Lu 0.5 )AG has been close to that (∼6.40 eV) of a YAG single crystal [27]. The results may also imply that the luminescence property of a (Gd, Lu)AG based phosphor can be finely tuned by varying the Lu content and the onset of optical transmittance of a transparent (Gd, Lu)AG bulk (single crystal or transparent ceramic) would shift towards a shorter wavelength with increasing Lu incorporation.…”

“…The optical spectra of pure YAG have been thoroughly studied before in a wide spectral range and a steeply rising intrinsic absorption edge has been found near 6.7 eV [8]. Fig.…”

“…The only exception is the investigation of the Nd 3+ 4f 3 -4f 2 5d absorption for YAG:Nd 3+ reported in Ref. [8]. In a view of the importance of this material for practical applications, we have undertaken experimental and theoretical investigations of the low-temperature emission and excitation spectra of Nd 3+ -doped YAG (including the comparison with an undoped YAG crystal) in the ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet spectral regions.…”
