Optical Biosensors: Implantable Multimodal Devices in Freely Moving Rodents

Abstract

This chapter describes small optoelectronic devices for measuring and controlling biological functions, in particular, the devices that enable optical measurement and optical stimulation under the free action of rodents. First, an overview of optoelectronic devices for small experimental animals such as mice and rats is presented. Next, based on the place where the device is installed in the living body, such a system is classified into three categories: in vitro, in contact with the living body, and in vivo. The system is explained using typical examples of each category. In particular, the in vivo implantation method is described in detail. Finally, the last section outlines the summary and plans for future development.
