Optical Coherence Tomography Findings in Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is a sight-threatening condition that may lead to blindness if left untreated. Surgical treatments may vary and are tailored to a single patient. Anatomical and functional results may vary, due to factors that are currently under study. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows a detailed visualization of the retinal structure. Some studies have been performed using OCT on eyes with retinal detachment. We performed a review on the subject. Several data have been obtained using… Show more

“…Microvascular alterations in retinal and choroidal circulation occurring in RRD eyes, even without macular involvement, have long been studied [19][20][21][22][23][24]. These macular microvascular changes, together with the photoreceptor alterations, are supposed to be responsible for the lack of vision improvement, despite good anatomical results [32,33].…”

“…Although there seems to be an association between OCTA parameters and final bestcorrected visual acuity (BCVA) in patients who underwent macula-off RRD surgery [18], the current evidence shows controversial results about the relationship between OCTA findings and RRD-surgery visual outcomes [19][20][21][22][23][24].…”

“…Retinal tissue ischemia and vascular remodeling observed in patients with prolonged RRD can influence the choroidal vascular structure. 10,22 Similarly, altered circulation with choroidal detachment accompanying RRD can cause detrimental retinal circulation. 23 The consequent changes in choroidal blood flow may cause an imbalance between the supply of oxygen and nutrients and the metabolic demands of the outer retina, leading to worse BCVA.…”
