Optical coherence tomography for ocular surface and corneal diseases: a review

Abstract: The advent of optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging has changed the way ophthalmologists image the ocular surface and anterior segment of the eye. Its ability to obtain dynamic, high and ultra-high resolution, cross-sectional images of the ocular surface and anterior segment in a noninvasive and rapid manner allows for ease of use. In this review, we focus on the use of anterior segment OCT, which provides an “optical biopsy” or in vivo imaging of various ocular surface and corneal pathologies, allowing t… Show more

“…Evaluation of corneal surgical interventions with SS-OCT covers a large variety of techniques, such as refractive surgery, keratoplasty, intrastromal corneal rings and others ( Fig. 13.10) [1,11,12]. In general, SS-OCT measurements have been shown to have better repeatability of corneal biometrical measurements compared with Scheimpflug, for corneal graft evaluation [8].…”

“…Imaging of these anatomical structures has shown to be of significant clinical relevance. Anterior segment OCT imaging allows for visualization and assessment of anterior segment ocular features, such as the tear film, cornea, conjunctiva, sclera, rectus muscles, anterior chamber angle structures, and lens [1].…”

“…AS-OCT imaging is useful for the analysis and measure of the calcium deposition and helpful in achieving a correct pathology management. It shows a hyper-reflective material around Bowman's layer causing shadowing in the posterior cornea stroma [3,29,30] (Figures 20 and 21).…”

“…Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was developed to assess the ocular posterior segment. Anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) was not described until 1994, and the first AS-OCT device was commercialized in 2005 [1][2][3].…”
