Optical coherence tomography in cornea and refractive surgery

Abstract: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is the most promising imaging technique used in ophthalmology today. Noninvasive, noncontact and having quick image acquisition makes OCT a requirement in ophthalmology practice. OCT can be used to gain cross-sectional images of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye. In cornea and refractive surgery anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) is used in presurgical planning and postsurgical evaluation. AS-OCT is especially needed in phakic intraocular lens implantation, laser-assis… Show more

“…18,20 Not until the transition from TD-OCT devices to SD-OCT devices using a broadband light source were significant improvements in image resolution achieved. 2 These newer devices, also known as Fourier-domain OCT ( FD-OCT ), dramatically enhanced the quality of their images by replacing the mobile reference mirror of TD-OCT devices with systems that rely on a spectrometer and high-speed camera to simultaneously capture and decode the multiple spectra containing the depth information across the whole scan.…”

“…ASOCT is a novel technology at present that produces the optical biopsy of the cornea which gives us direct clue to the pathology. [8] The role of ASOCT in analyzing the diagnosis of Descemet's membrane (DM) detachment in presence of corneal edema and its resolution post treatment has been very well documented. [8] Jhanji et al have reported a similar case which was successfully managed by conservative treatment.…”

[8] Jhanji et al have reported a similar case which was successfully managed by conservative treatment. [9] In our case, ASOCT findings confirmed that there was only edema with separation of the stromal lamellae without any DM detachment.…”

“…It works noninvasively, has no contact, and provides cross sectional images from anterior and posterior segments of the eye. Imaging of the anterior segment is needed in refractive surgery and contact lens implantation [ 1 ].…”
