Optical fiber probes for fluorescence based oxygen sensing

Abstract: An optical fiber sensing system, for monitoring oxygen aiming in vivo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) applications is presented. Oxygen detection is based on the dynamic quenching of the fluorescence of a ruthenium complex trapped in the porous structure of a sol-gel silica film. Oxygen concentration is determined by phase-modulation fluorometry. Preliminary results concerning the characterization of doped sol-gel thin films deposited by dip coating in glass slides and in optical fiber probes are presented. F… Show more

“…[1] Most sensor materials consist of a dye (an "indicator") contained in a polymeric matrix that serves not only as a solvent for the dye, but also as a solid support and as a selectively permeable membrane. Once such materials are obtained, they may be used in numerous formats, including planar sensor spots, [2,3] fiber-optic systems, [4,5] and as 2D foils for use in sensing imaging. [6] They may also be used as pressure-sensitive paints (PSPs) [7,8] to image the total pressure of air (via oxygen pressure) on the surface of aircrafts and cars.…”

“…The main reason for this was due to the fact that the luminescence collecting efficiency of the extrinsic configuration used is very small. In previous works, the use of the same sensing materials applied to intrinsic fiber probes or large fiber bundles allowed us to increase SNR and obtain a minimum detectable variation of 0.1% oxygen concentration [35] and 0.3 • C [34]. Therefore, there is room for improvement using intrinsic fiber probes and laser excitation.…”

“…The resulting fluorescence is collected by the optical fiber and is taken to a photodetector or spectrum analyzer for recording and analysis. Fiber-based fluorescence sensing has been deployed in sensing targets such as: aluminum ions [7], hydrogen peroxide [8], oxygen [9], and explosives [10]. Optical fiber based fluorescence sensors have also been deployed for biological applications, including measurements of biomolecules in solution [11], DNA [12], or enzyme assays within microstructured fibers [13].…”
