Optical humidity sensors based on titania films fabricated by sol–gel and thermal evaporation methods

Abstract: This paper reports a comparative study of an optical humidity sensor based on titania films fabricated by sol–gel and thermal evaporation methods. As semiconducting oxides are known for their n-type conduction because of the presence of oxygen vacancies, therefore they prove to be very good sensors for humidity. Sensing elements of the optical humidity sensor presented here consist of a rutile structured one-layered TiO2 thin film deposited on the base of an isosceles glass prism of thickness 1000 Å. This TiO2… Show more

“…MEMS-based humidity sensors can be categorized into capacitive, resistive, mechanical, oscillating, and thermoelemental types based on the sensing principle (Su et al 2006;Yadav et al 2007;Smetana and Unger 2008;Ma et al 2008). Among these several types of humidity sensors, the capacitive device is preferred because of its linear sensitivity in a wide range of relative humidity (RH).…”

“…1 Porous titania thin film electrodes can be synthesized through various approaches such as nanoparticle paste, 1 sol-gel methods, 4 electrochemical deposition, 5 chemical vapor deposition, 6 spray pyrolysis, 7 screen printing, 8 thermal evaporation, 9 and sputter deposition. 1-3 It has been demonstrated that a porous structure is of significant importance to increasing surface area compared to a compact structure.…”

“…Thus, the first physically adsorbed layer was immobile, and no new hydrogen bonds formed in the first physically adsorbed layer and newly coming water molecules. Therefore, no proton conduction took place at this stage, which exhibited low sensitivity at the low humidity 23, 24…”
