Optimal sensor placement for health monitoring of high-rise structure using adaptive monkey algorithm

Abstract: Summary Optimal sensor placement is a challenging task in the design of an effective structural health monitoring system. In this paper, a novel optimal sensor placement algorithm, called adaptive monkey algorithm (AMA), to cope with the sensor placement problem for target location under constraints of the computing efficiency and convergence stability is proposed. The dual‐structure coding method, instead of the traditional coding method, is adopted to code the solution. The adaptive operator is designed and … Show more

“…Based on the design information (e.g., structural drawings) of the Al‐Hamra Tower, a high‐fidelity full‐scale 3D FE model was developed (shown in Figure ) as a baseline model. When one considers to establish an FE model for analysis of tall buildings, commercial software such as ANSYS (Ansys, Inc) and ETABS (Computers and Structures, Inc.)() could be used. Herein, the full‐scale FE model of the Al‐Hamra Tower was built by ETABS given its distinctive advantage in modeling of building structures.…”

“…The adaptive monkey algorithm (AMA) [28] has new operator to provide an automatic adjustment to the climb and watch-jump processes of the original MA. It is difficult to judge the ending time of the climb process and the starting time of the watch-jump process resulting in the less efficient searching process.…”

“…Sun and Büyüköztürk developed an efficient discrete optimization scheme on the basis of the artificial bee colony algorithm, which was utilized to find a sensor layout by minimizing a MAC‐oriented objective function. Yi et al proposed a novel OSP algorithm, called adaptive monkey algorithm, to cope with OSP. They considered the maximum value of off‐diagonal terms of MAC as the cost function.…”
