The paper considers control system design for linearized three-dimensional perturbations about a nominal laminar boundary layer over a flat plate (the Blasius profile). The objective is prevention of the laminar to turbulent transition using appropriate inputs, outputs, and feedback controllers. They are synthesized with a view to reducing transient energy growth, a known precursor to important transition scenarios. The linearized Navier–Stokes equations are reduced to the Orr–Sommerfeld and Squire equations with wall-normal velocity actuation entering through the boundary conditions on the wall. The sensor output is taken to be the wall-normal derivative of the wall-normal vorticity measured on the plate. Several multivariable output controllers are examined, including simple constant gain output feedback, loop transfer recovery, and $$H_{\infty }$$ H ∞ loop shaping. Reduced order compensators are developed using balanced truncation and analyzed for robustness using the gap metric between reduced order models and full order models. It is demonstrated that the level of minimum transient energy growth that can be achieved is similar for these diverse controller methodologies but falls short of that which can be achieved using optimal state feedback.

This is the first bibliometric study of its kind in this domain and it investigates the use of numerical simulations for research related to turbulent drag reduction in channel and pipe flows using active flow control techniques using data from two databases: Scopus and Web of Science (WOS). A bibliometric analysis of 603 research publications related to active drag reduction using numerical simulations for turbulent channel and pipe flows has been done to analyze the progress in this research domain since the year 1984. The publications have increased significantly in this domain since 2017, one of the biggest reasons for this can be the increased availability of computational resources. Maximum work in this domain has been done by developed nations such as China, USA, UK, and Japan etc. The research can be categorized into four major clusters. The first cluster focuses on research exploring types of active drag reduction methods/agents used and the mechanisms involved. The second cluster involves different types of numerical modelling techniques used for flow control and their analysis. The third and fourth cluster highlights the different types of geometrical configurations used for numerical simulations and their impact on drag reduction and heat transfer related themes respectively.

Abstract. Maximising the power production of large wind farms is key to the transition towards net zero. The overarching goal of this paper is to propose a computational method to maximise the power production of wind farms with two practical design strategies. First, we propose a gradient-free method to optimise the wind farm power production with high-fidelity surrogate models based on large-eddy simulations and a Bayesian framework. Second, we apply the proposed method to maximise wind farm power production by both micro-siting (layout optimisation) and wake steering (yaw angle optimisation). Third, we compare the optimisation results with the optimisation achieved with low-fidelity wake models. Finally, we propose a simple multi-fidelity strategy by combining the inexpensive wake models with the high-fidelity framework. The proposed gradient-free method can effectively maximise wind farm power production. Performance improvements relative to wake-model optimisation strategies can be attained, particularly in scenarios of increased flow complexity, such as in the wake steering problem, in which some of the assumptions in the simplified flow models become less accurate. The optimisation with high-fidelity methods takes into account nonlinear and unsteady fluid mechanical phenomena, which are leveraged by the proposed framework to increase the farm output. This paper opens up opportunities for wind farm optimisation with high-fidelity methods and without adjoint solvers.
