Optimised paediatric CT dose at a tertiary children's hospital in Japan: a 4-y single-centre analysis

Abstract: Since diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for children are not currently established in Japan, the authors determined local DRLs for the full range of paediatric CT examinations in a single tertiary care children's hospital. A retrospective review of 4801 CT performance records for paediatric patients (<15 y old) who had undergone CT examinations from 2008 to 2011 was conducted. The most frequent examinations were of the head (52 %), followed by cardiac (15 %), temporal bone (9 %), abdomen (7 %), chest (6 %) an… Show more

“…The third quartile value for CTDI vol in children aged 1–5 years was reported to be 66 mGy in Belgium and 71 mGy in France . Recently, the mean CTDI vol and DLP for temporal bone CT in children aged 1–5 years at a tertiary children's hospital in Japan was reported to be 21 mGy and 151 mGy·cm, respectively . The radiation exposure using the low‐dose protocol in our study (CTDI vol , 9.9 mGy; DLP, 59.6 mGy·cm) was lower than in the above reports.…”

“…Because in the present study only patients from one tertiary paediatric hospital were included, the findings obtained may not apply to all paediatric CT examinations across the country. Further studies are therefore crucial to develop a national DRL and update the current local DRL (Ploussi et al 2020 ; Nakada et al 2016 ).…”
