Optimising the design of temporary zero-consumption living spaces

Abstract

The aim of this Doctoral Thesis is to analyse and improve the design criteria of temporary living spaces in order to obtain non-permanent buildings with a consumption as close to zero as possible. The correct identification of the factors influencing the design together with the analysis of current temporary living spaces will not only allow for more efficient living spaces with lower energy consumption, but will also reduce the carbon footprint generated by them and increase the safety of the camps by reducing the logistical burden.The research has an applied purpose based on descriptive knowledge obtained, seeking to improve the design criteria of living spaces currently used in various civilian and military indoles, where a building must be deployed urgently in order to solve a problem that has arisen. Among the techniques used to gather information, documentary research was used to establish the conceptual and contextual framework. The different types of temporary accommodation used in terms of deployment time and the design criteria for temporary accommodation from an energy point of view were studied. Finally, temporary living spaces with limited means have been analysed from an energy point of view, proposing an improvement of the criterion that has the greatest impact on the design of living spaces from the point of view of energy and economic sustainability. To conclude the thesis, the study of the Spanish Antarctic Base "Gabriel de Castilla" as a temporary living space has been carried out from the energy point of view, using the methodology described in this practical case.The result is a methodology for the analysis and improvement of the envelope of temporary living spaces which, in addition to analysing, optimises the thermal transmission coefficient in walls according to the cost of the installation, the time of use, the type of insulation used and the price of fuel.
