A reactive dividing wall column (RDWC) integrates reactive distillation and multiproduct separation together, leading to the realization of process intensification. However, the reluctance to use it is due to the uncontrollable vapor split, which is self-regulated according to the flow resistance on each side of the partition wall. For some cases, the pressure of reaction and multicomponent separation is different, which results in an energy penalty if we directly integrate these units together, for example, formic acid (FA) production through methyl formate (MF) as presented in the part I of this series (Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 2020, 59, 22215). To tackle these obstacles, a new reactive dividing wall column without the uncontrollable vapor split (NV-RDWC) by converting the bidirectional vapor–liquid thermal coupling to liquid-only transfer stream is proposed in this work. Optimization was first carried out by coupling the genetic algorithm (GA) and rigorous simulation. On the basis of the optimal solution, a detailed comparison was conducted between the conventional reactive distillation process, RDWC, and NV-RDWC, and the results show the superiority of NV-RDWC. Then two multiloop proportional-integral (PI) control structures and a model predictive control (MPC) for NV-RDWC were developed, respectively, to investigate their control performance. The dynamic response in the face of feed disturbance shows that MPC could give superior control performance for this complex coupled process.

Recently, divided wall column has been considered as one of the types of thermally coupled towers for separating multicomponent mixtures. In the structure of this tower, there is a wall that divides the tower into two parts, the Prefractionator and the Main Column. The divided wall column is thermodynamically equivalent of the Petlyuk tower. Therefore, in order to obtain the design and simulation parameters of the Petlyuk tower utilizing the available software, this tower must be divided into simpler towers. The shortcut method is employed to acquire the initial parameters. In the present research, initially, the design of divided wall column has been conducted using shortcut methods to separate three-component zeotropic mixtures. Next, the design and simulation of the divided wall column is performed employing ASPEN PLUS software and the results of the two methods are compared from various angles.

In this work we present a new approach that we use to simulate and optimize multiple dividing wall columns at the same time. Instead of considering all model equations as constraints and all process variables as optimization variables in a large and highly nonlinear optimization problem we only incorporate a subset of the model equations as constraints and a subset of the process variables as optimization variables. The remaining process variables are calculated from this subset by a robust and fast calculation procedure. This calculation procedure also ensures that the remaining model equations are satisfied. A comparison with the commercial process simulator Aspen Plus shows that with the new approach multiple dividing wall columns can be optimized more stable and better solutions are found. Moreover the time needed to find an optimal design decreases significantly.
