optimization-Based Home Energy Management System Under Different Electricity Pricing Schemes

Abstract: This paper represents an optimization-based home energy management system, by taking advantages of renewable resources and energy storage system for optimally managing the energy consumption and generation of the house. The surplus of renewable generation will be stored in energy storage system or will be injected into the main grid. An optimization algorithm is developed for this system in order to minimize the electricity bill of the house considering electricity tariffs. Four home appliances are considered … Show more

“…Nowadays, Demand Response (DR), and Renewable Energy Resources (RERs) are considered as major concepts in energy research topics [1]. The importance of DR programs and RERs is due to the advantages for all parts of the community including energy producers, consumers, and the environment by reducing the dependency on fossil fuels [2]. There is global concern about increasing of CO2 emissions, melting the glaciers, and the collapse of nature cycle [3], and hence, currently the demand of RERs and DR programs are increased [4].…”

“…Additional opportunities for efficient energy use are provided by Smart Grid technology, which involves the possibility of a two-way flow of information between a smart energy meter located in the home and the distribution network operator. This enables more efficient management of the energy demand of a residential building, e.g., by shifting the load to off-peak hours [14][15][16][17]. A home energy management system (HEMS) based on optimisation methods is presented in [14].…”

“…The objective of these systems is to find the optimal consumption schedule for consumers considering various factors such as their consumption profiles, energy cost and environmental concerns. Comprehensive literature reviews have been conducted in this area where factors such as DR programmes, optimization techniques and smart technologies have been considered [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23]. In a more advanced approach, Antonopoulos et al [24] have provided a comprehensive systematic review on applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques to Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) and network optimization by predicting the available DR capacity and price adjustment.…”
