Optimization of 3D Print Material for the Recreation of Patient-Specific Temporal Bone Models

Abstract: A PETG 3D printed temporal bone models performed the best for realistic appearance and HF as compared with PLA, ABS, PC, and nylon. The PLA and ABS were reliable alternatives that also performed well with both measures.

“…Haffner et al, compared five different materials, and stated that PETG was the most realistic material, followed by PC, PLA and ABS. Nylon properties were considered as not realistic enough [39]. PC was blamed to melt too easily during drilling while ABS could easily reproduce the bone haptic feedback during a cortical mastoidectomy [43].…”

“…3D printed temporal bone models can provide access to a standardized and reproducible simulation and have been shown in multiple studies to be a highly rated educational tool among residents because of the models’ physical realism . However, 3D temporal bone models have yet to be perfected with respect to material selection and manufacturing techniques that allow for accurate replication of bone properties while also being anatomically accurate . Hochman et al developed a model that is faithful in its reproduction of internal and external anatomical details and has mechanical properties similar to cadaveric bone .…”

“…Digital Surgical Planning (DSP) is widely used for the presurgical design of complex cases in areas such as orthopedic, orthognathic, and facial reconstructive surgery, among others (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). The DSP provides the surgeon with an opportunity to plan, calculate, and predict surgical complications, avoiding improvisations during the procedure (1,(3)(4)(5).…”

“…Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is the most common 3D printing method, primarily because of the simple processing and cost-e ciency. One of the most frequently used manufacturing materials in FDM 3D printers is acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) (2,3,(6)(7)(8). ABS is a cost-effective polymer that is easy to manage; it has good resistance, strength, and stiffness (1,(3)(4)(5)9).…”
