Optimization of a Contactless Power Transfer System for Electric Vehicles

Abstract: A contactless charging system based on a circular coil configuration is presented for electric vehicles. An analytical model of the charging system is derived and used to investigate the effect of system dimensions on the system mutual inductance. The efficiency of the system is then calculated and used as a criterion to optimize the dimensions of transmitter and receiver coils in an uncompensated system, as well as series and parallel compensated systems. As a result, several design rules are presented. Follo… Show more

“…The potential advantages of IPT systems include immunity to ice, water, and other chemicals; environmental friendliness; and zero maintenance requirement. In addition, IPT systems have been adopted in a number of applications, including in the wireless charging of biomedical implants [10], mining applications [11], underwater power supply [12], electric vehicles [13]- [20], and railway applications [21], because of their ease of use, environmental sustainability, and Manuscript received Nov. 9, 2015; accepted Jan. 28,2016 Recommended for publication by Associate Editor Dong-Myung Lee.low lifecycle cost.…”

“…One of the best proposed structures for the IPTEC is the "disc-type transformer," which can be placed under the vehicle [19]. In [20], [21], [22], the geometries of a pair of spiral coils are optimized to maximize the inductive power transmission. In [5], a control method for frequency optimization based on switching loss is proposed.…”
