Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is the most widely used process of unconventional machining for making work pieces with intricate shapes and reconditioning of Dies. EDM can cut any work piece having good electrical conductivity. The EDM machining is obtained through a series of electric sparks, the shaped tool and work piece will not have any physical contact. The sparks are facilitated by dielectric oil through a pulsed generation circuit. The commonly used commercial EDM oils are Kerosene, Paraffin, Transformer oil and these are derived from petroleum oil, whose reserves are extinct briskly. During the process of EDM, operation Pyrolysis happen and a thin layer of carbon suit is found on the work piece outer surface. In this present work, an attempt is made to identify Eco-friendly green Dielectric media using used Palmolive oil and investigations are made with the shaped copper tool as a tool electrode and EN31 steel as a work electrode. A Design of Experiments (DOE) is adopted and experiments are conducted with Applied current (I) pulse on time (Ton) and Pulse off time (TOFF) as input variables and electrode wear rate (EWR), Material removal rate (MRR), Tool wear rate (TWR) and Surface Roughness (SR). The Machining is done on EDM with Commercial EDM oil and with used Palmolive oil and blends of palm oil and EDM oil is performed and findings are given.

Electro Discharge Machining (EDM) is a noticeable machining practice among created unconventional machining procedures for intricate, complex profiles in "hard to machine" materials, similar to heat-treated steels, composites, superalloys, ceramics, composites, carbides, and so on. In EDM, the material expulsion of the cathode is accomplished through precise controlled electric discharge (the spark), which transforms the metals of two electrodes into melt and vaporize, and due to the breakdown of the dielectric medium. In this research work, the suitability of non-edible plant seed oils from Pongamia pinnata as a dielectric fluid in the EDM process was investigated. Also, the suitability of EDM oil as an alternate dielectric fluid for industrial application was studied. Electrode Wear Rate (EWR), Material Removal Rate (MRR), Surface Roughness (SR), and Tool Wear Rate (TWR) are the key performance features of EDM. The principal goal of EDM is to get higher MRR alongside accomplishing the sensibly good surface quality of the machined workpiece. The parameters that accomplish the most astounding MRR depend on the machining surface, which is related to the workpiece and tool. Dielectric is the most significant variable for obtaining excellent results for the above-stated key features. These investigations showed that Pongamia pinnata oil is a suitable dielectric media; the results are satisfactory comparing with that of EDM oil. The effect of topography of the workpiece and carbon particles dissolving is also checked with SEM analysis for any deviations on work surface.

Reusable spacecraft is increasingly attracting researchers’ attention. However, the experimental investigations on the turbine blade of the rocket engine are rarely published. Thus, the fatigue of a small impulse rocket turbine blade is explored in the current work. First, the specimen and the electrode of electrical discharge machining are carefully designed. Then, the electrical discharge machining is used to machine the specimen. To study the fatigue properties, the finite element analyses are separately performed on the blade model and the specimen. Based on the numerical results, a fatigue test is carried out to reproduce the most vulnerable position. Finally, the microstructural structures of the specimen are detected using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results show that (1) different from the aviation field, the specimen is unable to be machined with the welding method because it destroys the crucial details and the mechanical properties; (2) the maximum plastic strain is present at the leading edge close to the hub, at which a 760 μm corner crack appears at the 10113th fatigue cycle. This work provides a feasible method of using the EDM process to machine specimen for the small impulse turbine blade.
