Optimization of machining fixture layout using integrated response surface methodology and evolutionary techniques

Abstract: Fixtures are the work-holding devices, widely used in manufacturing, to completely immobilize the workpiece during machining. The position of fixture elements around the workpiece strongly influences the workpiece deformation which in-turn affects the machining accuracy. The workpiece deformation can be minimized by finding the appropriate position for the locators and clamps. Thus, it is necessary to model the complex behavioral relationship that exists in the fixtureworkpiece system. In this research paper, … Show more

“…The DEM has its advantages in analyzing discrete materials and FEM is already quite mature in solving continuum problems. 2831 DEM is used in this study to explore the transportation property and the degree of wear of scraper conveyor. In addition, the FEM is also applied in studying the deformations of scraper conveyor.…”

“…The performance of GA and particle swarm optimization (PSO) also has been compared for the optimization of the developed quadratic model. 13 The same methodology was extended to optimize the fixture layout for 3D workpiece in the continuous domain of the solution space, by accounting the material removal effect. 14 The prediction ability of the quadratic models developed by integrating FEM and RSM, can influence the final solution accuracy.…”

“…Many real-world and theoretical problems may be modeled in this general framework. [1][2][3] A priori and a posteriori are generally two approaches for optimizing multi-objective problems (MOPs). Many problems employed the a priori approach such as scalarization technique, where all preference information about fitness functions and their relative importance is known in advance.…”
