Optimization of Minituber Size and Planting Distance for the Breeder Seed Production of Potato

Abstract: The objective was to observe the effect of minituber grades and planting distance on growth, seed yield, increase ratio and seed potential of potato. The largest minitubers (>25 mm) planted at widest distance (25 cm) produced maximum number of tubers per plant (18.7). The highest number of tubers per m 2 (306.7) was obtained with largest minitubers (>25 mm) planted at the closest plant spacing 10 cm, while it was lowest (64.0) in smallest size minituber (<5 mm) with the widest distance 25 cm. A significant inc… Show more

“…The highest number of tubers m 2 (306.7) were obtained in 10 cm plant density in the largest Mts (> 25 mm). As a results of the Hossain et al (2015), similar to our results, larger size of Mt produced more and more seed tuber number with increased yield when it was planted in greater planting distance.…”

“…Similarly, in our study 90 % of Mt was obtained bigger than >25 mm at 30x30cm plant density. Hossain et al, (2015) were investigated six different Mt size (<5 mm, 5-10 mm, 10-15 mm, 15-20 mm, 20-25 mm, > 25 mm) and four planting distance (10, 15, 20, 25 cm) and their effects on growth and seed yield in Diamant variety. The largest Mts (> 25 mm) gave the highest number of tubers per plant (18.7) when planted in 25 cm plant density.…”

“…Universa at 5 and 20 plantlets per pot, respectively). When microtubers were used, mean minituber weight ranged from 2.43 g to 0.85 g. These values fall within the range of minituber size (0.5 -2.5 cm) previously mentioned by Struik and Wiersema (1999), Hossain et al (2015) reported that small sized minitubers represented the major portion of harvested minitubers, either from the culture of plantlets or microtubers. However, larger size could be obtained in large propagation beds (Roy et al, 1995).…”

“…The control plants produce many tubers; however, their weight and size were lower than bacteria and vermicompost (Table 4). According to Altaf Hossain (2015), reported that mini tubers size classification: undersize ≤5 mm, pea-size (5-10 mm), small size (10-15 mm), medium size (15-20 mm), large size (20-25 mm) Many studies mention the effect of mini tuber size on seed production; seed tuber size is one of the significant factors affecting yield and quality in potatoes. Tuku (2000) revealed that larger mini tubers seeds give more vigorous plants than the small ones.…”
