Optimized generation of high resolution breast anthropomorphic software phantoms

Abstract: Purpose: The authors present an efficient method for generating anthropomorphic software breast phantoms with high spatial resolution. Employing the same region growing principles as in their previous algorithm for breast anatomy simulation, the present method has been optimized for computational complexity to allow for fast generation of the large number of phantoms required in virtual clinical trials of breast imaging. Methods: The new breast anatomy simulation method performs a direct calculation of the Coo… Show more

“…To test the approach a digital mammography phantom [17], mimicking compressed female breast of a volume of approximately 450 ml, was simulated in the same setup configuration. Four different tissue types are contained: skin, adipose tissue, dense fibroglandular tissue and Cooper's ligaments.…”

“…The generation of the 3D breast anatomy of the phantom was carried out using the computer anthropomorphic breast phantoms developed at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) described in Section 4.3 [Bakic et al, 20024.3 [Bakic et al, , 2011Pokrajac et al, 2012].…”

“…The breast phantoms used in this work were proposed by Pokrajac et al, 2012. They are formed by three materials: fat tissue, glandular tissue and skin. The effect of the Cooper's ligaments was modeled by the anisotropy of the proposed biomechanical model as described in Section 4.5.1.…”
