Optimizing aspects of pedestrian traffic in building designs

Abstract: Abstract-In this work, we investigate aspects of building design that can be optimized. Architectural features that we explore include pillar placement in simple corridors, doorway placement in buildings, and agent placement for information dispersement in an evacuation. The metrics utilized are tuned to the specific scenarios we study, which include continuous flow pedestrian movement and building evacuation. We use Multidimensional Direct Search (MDS) optimization with an extreme barrier criteria to find opt… Show more

“…Most related to our work is the optimization of crowd‐affecting environment parameters. Optimization of features, such as pillars, has been studied by Rodriquez et al and Jiang et al for a single steering algorithm. Recent literature shows that the choice of steering algorithm affects the output of environment optimizations …”

“…Architectural optimization. The work in studies the optimal placement of pillars for specific evacuation scenarios using a single steering algorithm. In contrast, we take a step back and systematically observe the sensitivity of steering algorithms and its parameters and the parameters of environment elements (e.g., pillar shape) on the optimization results as well as evaluating additional environments.…”

“…To optimize the movement-based design principles after Covid'19, the new office design parameters need to be set forth. Since there are many studies on office design optimization (Boje, Li, 2018), building occupancy simulation (Rai, Hu, 2018), agent based systems (Muravev, 2021;Norouziasl, 2020;Luo et al, 2017), pedestrian traffic (Rodriguez et al, 2013), ant colony optimization (Guarnizo, Pineda, 2019), elevator traffic (So, Al-Sharif, 2015) and wayfinding (Kuliga et al 2019;Vilar et al, 2012;Hölscher et al 2009); there are few research Kelsey, 2021;Gomez et al 2021) on the means of new working habits and user movement after Covid'19 pandemic.…”
